Part 3 – Let Your Child Teach You

In our last 2 segments, we explored using games to interact with children in English at home. Not only is this great for reinforcing what the student has learned in school, but it’s a fun, easy way for families to build their relationships. Many parents, however, are sure to ask a few more questions about how this can work.

What if I dont know the language as well as my child?

Let the child teach you!

What if I know more than the child?

Let the child teach you!

Have the child teach the parent.

There is a large set of benefits to children teaching their parents, especially when it comes to foreign languages. These are true whether the parent is more knowledgeable or not:

● We have all heard that “you learn best that which you teach.” This is the reason that students do projects and presentations at school. Why not allow them to do miniature projects and presentations by acting as a teacher in the home?

● This strategy puts children in a position of authority, which builds self-esteem and leadership skills. It also shows students what teaching is like, which can make them more empathetic towards their classroom teachers and their parents.

● Children usually love to roleplay. If they are enjoying the process, the children are more likely to acquire the target skills and information.

● Language learning takes place best in a communicative environment. Having a child teach someone means that they have to use the language, not just regurgitate it. This is far more effective and well-rounded than worksheets.

In addition:

● Parents will stay informed about their children’s progress as they see how much they’ve retained and can use in a communicative environment.

● Children will see where their skill gaps are and seek to fill/correct them. This is often far more accurate and motivating than testing or having other people point out what they need to work on.

● The parents show their children how to be a lifelong learner.

● The parents benefit from their children’s teaching. (Hey, free English lessons at home!)

● The home becomes a place where the foreign language has a use, which makes children more comfortable with it.

The keys to making this role-reversal work are:

● Be a good student. Learning at home should be fun for the child. Bad students are not fun to teach. Although it might be humorous to play the role of a naughty student, you may inadvertently introduce or reinforce poor behavior. At the very least, you will distract the child from the real goal. (That is, unless the learning targets include commands such as, “Don’t do that!” or “Stay in your seat, please.”)

● Only be a student during student time. There’s nothing worse than a roleplay participant who keeps trying to switch roles or be a control freak. If you take over the teaching role, it undermines the child’s authority and negates the whole point of the exercise.

● Ask genuine questions that you really don’t know the answers to. Genuine questions make the experience more rewarding for both of you and creates a truly communicative learning environment.

Sounds good, but when do I have time for that???

You’d be surprised at how flexible this technique can be. Just a few seconds here and there as you go about your daily life can be an opportunity to learn and practice English.

We’ll discuss the many ways and places you can use English with your child in part four. Stay tuned!

或“Stay in your seat, please.”
