How To Use English at Home – Part 5 Bilingual

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Making up songs may not come naturally to you, but you’ll learn to love it. It’s simple:

● First, choose a melody you and the child know.

● Then, use English words to talk about something you’re doing/thinking about. You can even make the song a conversation.

● The words don’t have to rhyme or fit perfectly with the rhythm of the song.

That’s part of the fun!

● After the parent sings a line, the child sings one.

● No matter what, tell them it’s great. This is about experimenting with language.

Let’s try an example:

● The tune of “Twinkle, Twinkle”

● Parent: “I am making up the bed, then you will lay down your head.”

● Child: “I don’t want to go to sleep. I do not like counting sheep.”

(I literally made those lines up as I was typing them.)

Let’s try one that isn’t such a perfect fit but fun anyway:

● The tune of “Mary Had a Little Lamb”

● Parent: “Now we have to go to school, go to school, go to school.”

● Child: “I can see my friends and play and learn and study a lot.”

After a while, your child will start to initiate the process:

● The tune of “Mary Had a Little Lamb”

● Child: “What time will we eat dinner, eat dinner, eat dinner?”

● Parent: “We will eat when we get home and after you learn to cook.”

Making up songs this way is a kind of game in itself. It taps into creativity and is great for children who are playful and vocal. It can also be a good way to bring these qualities out of children who are reluctant to make mistakes or rather shy of talking. Again, allow children to use translators and dictionaries to look up words. This is not a test; it’s a form of play that uses their existing skills. If they want to expand those skills, great!

Conclusion:

I know this is a lot to take in. Don’t worry.

Start with small steps. Play a game using English twice a week. As mentioned above, a lot of this can even be done while you’re traveling. You can sing songs during bath time or while cooking dinner. Many games and songs can involve exercise, or even cleaning the house! Ask your child to teach you the word for something or how to say a basic phrase here and there. Using English will become a natural and enjoyable part of your familys life.

I am making up the bed, then you will lay down your head.”

孩子:“I don’t want to go to sleep. I do not like counting sheep.”

这些句子是张口就能编出来的,非常容易。

我们再来看一个例子,虽然不能完美地唱进去,但也很有趣:

用“玛丽有只小绵羊”的旋律来改写歌词。

家长:“Now we have to go to school, go to school, go to school.”

孩子:“I can see my friends and play and learn and study a lot.”

熟练以后,可以让孩子来开头:

孩子:“What time will we eat dinner, eat dinner, eat dinner?”

家长:“We will eat when we get home and after you learn to cook.”
