Transforming Teachers into Developers
Hello, my name is Zeke. I work with The Code Club and I am working on the Teacher to Developer program. The Teacher to Developer program is an educational program designed to transform expat teachers in Asia’s into developers.
What are we doing?
We are teaching expat teachers in Asia how to code. We have a fun social way to learn. The program is part-time. Our students have little or no experience coding. The time commitment is just right at around 8 hours a week. The classes are online with a small fixed group of people. Even though the class is online, it is social. You get a learning experience that is not static but conversational. Our students meet once a week with a mentor and once a week with their peers.
“It’s been a very rewarding experience, especially the independent study aspect. I like how our mentor is a professional but also encourages us to think on our own rather than just telling us the answers. I am planning on continuing with the program and would definitely recommend it to anyone with an interest in coding!” – Dan, a student from our last batch
What can someone expect to get out of the program?
By the end of the program, you should expect to have a good foundation in the basics of programming. You will have experience working with source control (git). You will end the program by publishing a game. We also want our students to be able to start taking steps on there own, so they can figure out how to learn without our help. There is an option for you to get a certificate at the end of the program.
Why are we doing this?
There are some really great free resources for learning how to code. This information is generally static, and often learners will run into issues. An issue a learner might run into might be coding bugs, having issues understanding a concept, or maybe a motivational issue. With the Teacher to Developer program, we pair you with a senior developer to help you when you get stuck and to help you when you need something clarified. We also pair you with a group of peers to make the experience more social and fun. You get a support group and accountability to excel your learning. What we provide you will not find in other places.
I am doing this because I love entrepreneurship and because when I was learning to code I wanted something that was not available. I wanted friends that were interested in coding. I wanted guidance from people with more experience. The only options right now to have a social learning experience with mentorship is with something like a traditional bootcamp. I did not want to go to a bootcamp.
Traditional bootcamps have a series of issues. We are not like a traditional bootcamp in a few ways. This is not an overly intensive program where you have to quit your job, go to a new city, book a hotel and cram information. This is a program you can do while you work. You have time to absorb the information your learning. Since our program is online you do not need to travel to a new city. You get the best of a bootcamp, a social learning experience, an experienced mentor and you get guidance and peers who are interested in the same thing as you. We have taken the best bits from a bootcamp and put it in the Teacher to Developer program.
How did you develop this program?
I am a self-taught Android developer. I learned to code by reading books and making stuff. Now I am a successful freelance Android developer. I learned to code part-time while working in a sales job. The majority of my learning I did on my own. Learning alone is very tough. Towards the end of my pre-job learning experience, I created the Mobile Development Learning Advancement Group. This group consisted of me, Marcelino and Vadim. We were all self-taught developers trying to get our first jobs. We met weekly and held a series of group studying session. We studied multiple topics and helped each other in a few ways. We had no senior guidance but helped each other. I organized the group because we did not have someone to show us the way. Without senior guidance, we could at least have peer support and peer learning. We all became successful software engineers. Now I am an experienced developer I have improved our old formula and turned it into The Teacher to Developer program. Making our program one of the best ways to learn how to code.
The Teacher to Developer Program is designed for Expats in Asia who want to develop another career while not hindering their current one. We have made it as efficient and as fun as possible. You can find more out about our program here. Our next cohort starts on the 15th of March 2019.
